Easy Homemade Bagels

Updated: Jan 16

I've had this recipe saved on TikTok for months and today I finally got the motivation to try it out and make some bagels! With just a few simple ingredients and in just under 2 hour you too can have these simple homemade bagels ready for brunch!

Servings: 8-12 bagels depending on size

Ingredients:

2 1/4 cup warm water

1 tbsp sugar

1.5 tbsp active dry yeast

5-6 cups (600-720g) flour (if weighing your ingredients you'll need closer to 6 cups)

2 tsp salt

1 egg mixed with 1 tsp water

Toppings of choice (optional, such as cheddar and jalapeño, everything but the bagel seasoning, sesame seeds, etc)

Directions:

In a measuring cup or bowl combine water, sugar, and active dry yeast. Stir and let it rest for around 10 minutes until bubbly. In a large bowl mix together your flour and salt. Add your bubbly water and yeast mixture to your flour and combine to form a shaggy dough. Transfer dough to a floured surface and knead for 10 minutes. If your dough is sticky, add a little more flour. If adding toppings, such as cheddar and jalapeño, you'll want to add it towards the end and knead it in gently. Divide and shape your dough into 8-12* rolls of equal size, cover with a towel, and let them rest for about 15 minutes. With your hands, shape the dough into a bagel form by piercing the center to create a hole and gently stretching the dough. Cover with a towel and let the bagels rest for 30 minutes. As the dough rests, preheat your oven to 350, line a baking sheet with parchment paper, and bring a large pot of water to a boil. After the 30 minutes, place 2-3 bagels in your pot of water and boil each side for 1-2 minutes. Transfer to your baking sheet, cover in egg wash, and top as desired. I would work 2-3 bagels at a time, the toppings will stick better while the egg wash is still wet. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until golden. Transfer to a wire rack to cool otherwise the bottom may get soggy. Slice in half and eat!

* If you're making 12 the rolls will look tiny but they will expand significantly when you go to boil. 8 will make large bagels, 12 will be closer in size to what you buy at the store.
